Google Inc. on Friday said it is entering Wikipedia territory with a new service where users can write about subjects they know about.
Word of the service, dubbed "knols," was posted on the Mountain View-based search giant's (NASDAQ:GOOG) corporate blog.
Users can use knols to create Web pages that contain photos and entries about their subjects.
Google said it doesn't plan to edit nor exercise any control over content on the knols. It plans to serve up ads on the pages, with the author's permission. The revenue would be shared with the authors, the company said.
Wikipedia has more than 2.1 million English-language articles and 75,000 active contributors, often drawing users to its site from Google searches.
